The first floating heavy-lift offshore installation vessel to be built in Taiwan, the 216.5m-long Green Jade, is to be classed by ABS. The vessel, ordered by CDWE, a joint venture between Taiwan’s CSBC and Belgium marine engineering group DEME, will be built at CSBC in Taiwan and deployed in the region’s offshore wind sector.

Due for delivery in 2022, the DP3 Green Jade will have dual-fuel propulsion and a waste heat recovery system to maximise energy efficiency. With a crew of up to 160 people and a crane of 4,000-tonne capacity, the vessel will be capable of installing the heaviest monopiles, jackets and turbines in offshore waters.

According to Matt Tremblay, the classification society’s senior vice president of Global Offshore Markets, the new ship is a key development for both the region’s offshore wind capability and the Taiwanese shipbuilding industry. “Offshore wind has huge potential for growth globally and ABS has the experience to help the industry achieve its ambitions with an unwavering focus on safety,” he said.
